Cutting-Edge Tech Powers Instant 2D to 3D Virtual Clothing

With machine learning and augmented reality, the world is your oyster—or, your fitting room. The Snap AR team has made incredible advancements that no other development tool offers in regards to real-time apparel try on. You can actually transfer a 2D image of clothing, let’s say off of your shopping website, and allow consumers to try it on in 3D, in a real-time AR experience. In fact, we released our patented solution in Lens Studio, called Garment Transfer, in 2022. With Garment Transfer, you can seamlessly apply an image of an upper body garment—think shirts and sweaters—to the user of your Lens to create real-time, 3D try-on in minutes. From fashion brands to music bands, we’ve seen realistic try-on experiences by brands on Snapchat or in AR Mirrors engage fans, which we feel can directly influence purchases.

The first version we released a few years ago has resulted in hundreds of thousands of interactions on Snapchat. Over the past year, we’ve worked to improve Garment Transfer and have now released better quality and stability of the garment–so try-on is even more realistic–and incorporated accurate neckline support for more clothing options like coats, blazers, and hoodies.

For AR Creators working with brands that want cost-effective and speedy virtual try-on experiences, Garment Transfer saves time, money, and doesn’t require expertise. You can easily add the garment transfer component and drag an image of the desired garment into Lens Studio. It’s that simple. Now, at least for upper body clothing, virtual try-on experiences don’t require lengthy 3D asset development and rounds and rounds of feedback.

As the leading European online platform for fashion and lifestyle, Zalando has been leveraging AR ads with Garment Transfer—enabling Snapchatters to virtually try on, at scale, different products that can be purchased at Zalando, moving away from traditional ads to immersive ad formats.

“Zalando has been an early adopter of all things AR. Together with Snap, we have evolved and tested how such new ad experiences lead to a more interactive ad experience. We are excited to continue leveraging this format to continue driving incremental conversions,”

- Pablo Suarez, Senior Marketing Manager at Zalando

Garment Transfer can be used for more than retail experiences. Fans can celebrate and show their team spirit by wearing their team’s jersey and face paint—like this example of the NFL's Super Bowl LVIII Lens—or, you can get festive in holiday themed outfits to send a seasonal greeting to friends on Snapchat.
